Preparing the Winter garden

After such a dry summer up here in the Eyrie Nest at the M.A.D Skool of Arts because our water supply was cut of from the December 2011 floods. I have gone about expanding our garden beds, preparing the soils and to ensure water last weekend we were given a 10,000 litre water tank to set in place.

On the fringes of the old cement work amongst the limestone rock cliffs and 60 metres above the Bay it creates a great micro-climate zone where it is possible to grow almost anything. Today the garlic was planted out and `believe it or not the winter potatoes are planted, they thrive around the rocky bedsand full all day sun.

I will keep you updated on the Skools organically homegrown fruit and vegetables gardens as they develop and grow.

Furthermore, Chook Heaven, the chicken pen has had a recent upgrade to deal with the local falcon, which took two young chic and the mother. The two inner pens and two outer enclosures have now been cover in netting. This also keeps the possums at bay. Going into winter the chicken are molting - preparing a new feathers to keep them warm. In doing so all but one have gone off the lay. We have`12 chickens and a rooster plus 6 bathams and a rooster.
